Team of the round

September 12 and 13, 1998

Atl. de Madrid
Jugovic 48
(pen)
Kiko 55'
Torrisi 80' 2 yellows
2 - 0 U.D. Salamanca
Atletico Madrid stormed into victory thanks to the inspiration of Juninho, who came on as a substitute. Kiko, as usual, demonstrated his magic, scoring the definite 2nd goal. Jugovic was tireless in his midfield work. Atletico still looks powerful despite losing star striker Vieri. The Powerful Atletico offense showed to be just as potent.

Valladolid 0 - 1 Real Madrid
9'  Mijatovic
87'
2 yellows   Roberto Carlos
Real Madrid secured the leeague lead with a victory over Valladolid. After the early Mijatovic goal, Real Madrid played conservitavely, preserving players for the more important Champions' League clash with Inter Milan on Wednesday. The major incident was a double yellow to Roberto Carlos due to bad refereeing. The referee invented a 2nd bookable offense, and will be unable to play next round against Barcelona.

Ath. Bilbao
Ímaz 17'
Urzáiz 44'
2 - 0 Racing  Santander
Bilbao took control of the gameplay after a dissapointing start of the season. They look to gain some confidence for their Champions' League debut on Wednesday.

Barcelona
Figo 23'
1 - 0 Extremadura
Barcelona continues to be unimpressive in the league, after also having a poor preseason. This time they snuck by newly-promoted Extremadura. Kluivert and Pellegrino made their debuts, and Kluivert was notably ineffective and unimpressive. Rivaldo looked dangerous and in form. It turns out that an old crowd favorite, Luis Figo, became the hero with his fine goal.

Villarreal
Craioveanu 10'
1 - 1 Celta de Vigo
32'  Penev
Villarreal played surprisingly well to limit UEFA contenders Celta de Vigo to a tie. Romanian international Gh. Craioveanu continued to show good form this season by opening the score with the 1-0. Veteran Bulgarian striker L. Penev, new signing of Celta, was dangerous as usual, saving Celta with his goal.

Deportivo
Schürrer 4'
1 - 0 Valencia C.F.
Deportivo won this difficult battle between 2 very strong teams. Valencia was hurt by the absence of Argentine forward Claudio Lopez, still under a suspension from last  season. For Deportivo, Turu Flores was a bright spot, but Brasilian midfielder Djalminha was dissapointing, continuing to struggle in the league play despite a good preseason. He missed a 2nd half penalty. Mauro Silva was also in good form, acting as the rock upon which Depor was built.

Real Betis
Oli 58'
1 - 3 Zaragoza
34'  Marcos Vales
47'  Jamelli
79'  Milosevic
Real Zaragoza once again shines, while Real Betis continues to be a great deception. The only new star playing for Betis was Denilson, who has yet to find his good WC form. Milosevic is in good form for Zaragoza, who are now 2nd in the standings.

C.D. Tenerife
Juanele 29'
Makaay 64'
2 - 2 Real Sociedad
54'  Jáuregui
94'
a.g. Vierklau
Real Sociedad was saved from a loss by Tenerife defnder Vierklau's own goal in the 94th minute. Tenerife's Juanele once again came through. Real Sociedad is showing poor form after a great 97-98 campaign.

Oviedo
César 34'
1 - 0 Alavés
A rather dull encounter between 2 small teams. Newly-promoted Alaves got the losing end of it.

Mallorca
Dani 27'
Chupa López 48'
2 - 0 Espanyol
Mallorca, last season's revelation, continue to show they deserve the 1st division spot, even after losing the majority of last season's talent to the big clubs. Young and promising former Real Madrid striker Dani has been impressive this year.
