|Spain: The Spanish federation offered the national
team job to former Espanyol coach Jose Camacho. The former national team player, capped 81
times for Spain, quit his post at Real Madrid earlier this summer. He has accepted with
one condition- he wants the Federation to keep out of his official affairs. This puts the
Federation between a rock and a hard place- on one end, a power hungry coach, and on the
other, embarassment for turning down the man that was offered the job. RFEF has yet to
accept the conditions.

New acquisitions before yesterday's signing deadline: Kluivert (AC Milan) to Barcelona; Pellegrino (Velez) to Barcelona; Victor (Real Madrid) to Racing; M÷ller (PSV) to Oviedo; Celso Ayala (River Plate) to Real Betis.
After a fall out with Atletico president Gil and head coach Sacchi, Italian striker Christian Vieri has left the club. His new destination is Lazio of Rome, for which he has signed for a reported $28 million transfer.
Italy: Lazio defeated Juventus in the Italian Super Cup on Saturday. Ivan De La Pe˝a started the first goal with a fine chip in the area to Mancini, beating the defense. Mancini backheeled the pass to Nedved who shot and scored. Juve equalized on a controversial penalty, I which a Lazio defender was hit in the back by the ball. Later in the game, Mihailovic gave up his body to save an open goal, slamming into the post after sliding to clear the ball. Near injury time, Lazio created a great midfield play that starter with De La Pe˝a's passback to Salas, and ended a few quick passes later with Sergio Conceišao's shot and goal.

defeated Salzburg of Austria 2-1 on goals by Roche and Lucarelli. Valencia advances on a
4-1 aggregate to the UEFA Cup. Bologna of Italy also earned a UEFA Cup spot today.
Italy: Juventus defeated A.C. Milan 2-1 in the Berlusconi trophy of Milan. Bierhoff opened the scoring with his trademark aerial goal for Milan. His goal was in vain after Filipo Inzaghi scored off a lucky deflection to tie. Later in the match Inzaghi scored the equalizer after a fine team play.
Spain :Real Betis lost another coach, the 2nd since Aragones quit after the World Cup. This time it was Portugese coach Oliveira, with the club for a mere 22 days. The new coach looks to be Vicente Cantatore of Argentina. Oliveira cited his reason for quitting- the list of UEFA players. According to him, the Betis management changed the list that he submitted to them, leaving out Yugoslav midfielder Albert Nadj. Real Betis will be the 2nd team to go through 3 coaches in less than a full month- Real Madrid is the other (Heynckes- Camacho- Hiddink).
|Spain : With the
leaving of Bielsa imminent, Espanyol of Barcelona is on the hunt for a new coach, with
very little time remaining. The two candidates according to the Italian media are Cesare
Maldini and Ruud Guulit.
Haruna Babangida will play for Barcelona B next season. Though not the first team of Barcelona, the B team will play in the highly competitive and prestigious 2nd Division "A" next season. Italy: The doping probe continues... This time, Ronaldo was questioned. He commented to the media that the investigators were doing a good job, but did not go into what he was asked.
|Spain: Espanyol of Barcelona is negotiating a contract with Argentine central
defender Eduardo Berizzo.
The controversial doping investigation continues. The case has been taken to the
magistrate, this after AS Roma coach Zdenek Zeman infamed the nation by accusing Italian
athletes of widely using performance enhancing drugs. He particularly accused Alessandro
Del Piero of Juventus and Gianluca Vialli of Chelsea, both of whom are suing him for the
comments. Many other players are now being questioned by police, including Dino Baggio and
